Artist's Comments: The painting can be read from left to right, beginning with the canvas behind the camera. The canvas represents us as we enter life, a blank canvas, or a clean slate. The camera is a way in which we record the events of our lives. The cast turned back to the canvas is like one looking back on their childhood, if I knew... On the right hand side is a death mask, and the rose is in memory of loved ones who have passed. Under the shelf on the left is a postcard of 'THE GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING' by Vermeer. It represents youth and beauty. Then there is a young Rembrandt and a later self-portrait, showing the passage of time. Then on the right is a detail of 'THE JEWISH BRIDE' by Rembrandt. It shows the hands of the bride and groom resting together on her belly. This gives us insight into what really matters in life; sharing, love, togetherness, and children. This painting won 3rd place at the Duxbury Winter Show 2005
